On 8 February 2024, Butterfly Cameroon association organised a seminar at the Alliance francaise Maroua, in collaboration with the Association Pour La Promotion et L’organisation des Spectacles- APOS on the theme “Mental Health and School Performance: At the Crossroads”.
The main aim of the event was to raise awareness and understanding of the links between mental health and school performance.
Specific objectives included identifying factors linked to student mental health, proposing solutions to strengthen the resilience of failing students, raising awareness among educational stakeholders of the impact of domestic violence on student mental health, and examining the influence of teachers’ mental health on student achievement.
A highlight of the event was the intervention of Mrs Flore Nassi, a survivor of domestic violence and member of the Butterfly Cameroon Amazons initiative. For around twenty minutes, she shared her experience on the theme of “Surviving the Family Storm: Impact of Domestic Violence on the Mental Health of Students – A Story of Parental Resilience”.
The young people of the APOS association put on a magnificent theatrical performance on the theme of the day. This was coordinated by Mr. HADA JEAN ZIKOUNDA, Professor of Bilingual Literature at the Lycée Bilingue de Maroua Domayo, and also supervisor of the Butterfly Cameroon Mental Health Club hosted by the school.
The seminar was attended by students and teachers from several schools in the city of Maroua, including Lycée Bilingue de Maroua Domayo, Collège Islamique Sabil, Lycée Bilingue de Maroua and Lycée de Ouro Tchédé.
